Explorations in Mediums This series illustrates the expressive qualities of various combinations of medium and stroke; abstract compositions of watercolor, crayon, and ink.
Black on white, or white on black? A few pieces of the series are displayed here, which challenge the perception of negative and positive space. The first two compositions evolved from the repositioning of pieces cut apart from a 4x4in black cube; the bottom row exhibits color reversals. All done with black and white 9x12 construction paper. The last image was done as an analysis in color theory. After mixing our own 4-color palette, I assembled a composition with an alternating dominant background color in each square.
After extensive acrylic color mixing, I created a palette of seafoam green, sage green, slate blue, and a saturated orange. Through a cut-and-paste strategy using my color samples, I created a series of 4 compositions, each with a different color as the background.
